Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. Liberal and very intelectual, he was the most 
tough ennemy of the tyrannical dictator Solano Lopez of Paraguay

At the beggining of the war in 1865 the brazilian fleet smashed the paraguayan navy in the battle of Riachuelo
and took control of the River Plate. Canvas by Vitor Meirelles (1870) 

The terrible battle of Avaí in december 1868 was a decisive victory for the allies and killed
the last hopes of Lopez - Canvas by Pedro Americo (1877)
